Subsoil Salinity Tool Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Where can I find the latest version of the Subsoil Salinity Tool (SST)?

The latest version can be found at:

2. Is the SST Version 3.0 compatible with all Versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11?

The current version of the SST Version 3.0 (Build 3.0.1.  July 28, 2021) is broadly compatible across a wide range of Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems, and a broad range of Office installations (Excel is required for SST functioning).

However, there are rare instances where guidelines may no longer calculate after recent Windows and/or Office updates, and are generally related to conflicting or missing registry entries and are highly dependent on subtle Microsoft-related system details.

If you find that guidelines do not calculate on the final page, or an error is created on the final guideline page, you can first try repairing / cleaning-up old registry entries left behind during Microsoft Office or Windows updates.   This has been known to fix certain instances of these errors, but not all.

 Right Click on Start Menu

  1. Click Apps and Features

  2. Search Microsoft 365

  3. Click Microsoft 365

Depending on Windows version you may be able to click “Modify” and then Select “Online Repair”, or you may need to click “Advanced Options” and then “Repair”.  Depending on version, there may also be a “Reset” option which could be tried if the “Repair” option doesn’t work, but is more aggressive (consult with your IT department first).

Other details on repairing an Office installation, and instructions for slightly different installation types are provided in the Microsoft link below:

If the problem persists after these approaches, please contact sstinfo@eqm.ca with your system details (Office version details, Windows version details) and we can help evaluate other potential options using targeted diagnostic tools.

3.0 Report Printing Troubleshooting

The SST software goes through the modelling inputs and guideline calculations fine, and asks for a location to save the report following a click of the “report” button, but then does nothing more and provides the following errors:

Followed by:

And:

The software simply goes back to the calculated Guideline Summary page.

This problem is common when the application is installed using the ".msi" installer which does not include the Crystal Reports runtime.  Please uninstall SST and re-download the setup package from this site: https://www.alberta.ca/part-one-soil-and-groundwater-remediation

After extracting the download, start the installation by running the "setup.exe" rather than running the "SSTv3.msi" directly.  Note that you will need administration rights on the PC to perform the install.
